 note = {Extensive reading (henceforth ER) has been practiced at many educational nstitutes and is gaining popularity as an effective English learning method. Because of its flexibility, ER can be adopted by various learners regardless of their age, occupation, language learning experience, and proficiency. Even those who have long since graduated from high school and university can restart learning English through ER without any hesitation. In order to promote ER as a tool for lifelong learning, the role of public libraries should be considered. It is necessary to provide ER practitioners with appropriate information and enough books through public libraries in each community. This paper reports how some public libraries in Shizuoka Prefecture have started introducing ER services and how they should continue to support ER for lifelong learning.},
